Explore The Park

Discover the Natural and Cultural Heritage of Divje Babe

Explore the Park on Foot – Circular Trail

The circular trail begins in the village of Reka, where visitors will find a small parking area and an information board. The starting point is easy to access and clearly marked. From the main road towards Tolmin, the route crosses a small bridge and continues to the trail entrance, marked by the recognizable Divje Babe Archaeological Park gateway visible from the main road.

From here, the trail leads past the digitally enhanced Divje Babe Cave, where visitors can discover the story of the Neanderthal flute — the world’s oldest known musical instrument.

The route then climbs towards the Church of St. John the Baptist on the Šebrelje Plateau, offering panoramic views of the Idrija–Cerkno hills and a connection with the cultural heritage of the area. The trail continues back to the starting point in Reka, creating a complete circular experience of the archaeological park.

The route includes varied terrain, scenic viewpoints, and a combination of natural and historical heritage.

The trail is equipped with direction signs that make navigation easy.

Explore the Park on Foot – Mulatjera Trail

For a shorter walk or independent exploration, visitors can follow the Mulatjera Trail, a scenic historic route connecting Reka and Šebrelje. The starting point is the same as for the circular trail of Divje Babe Archaeological Park, from where the path leads through varied landscape with beautiful views over the Idrijca River valley.

The route follows a former transport path that connected the plateau with the valley for centuries and offers insight into the historical way of life in the area. The trail gradually climbs towards the Church of St. John the Baptist on the Šebrelje Plateau, offering panoramic views and a connection to the region’s cultural heritage.

This section of the trail can be explored independently or combined with the circular route through Divje Babe Archaeological Park. If visitors continue downhill past the digitally enhanced cave, the trail returns to the starting point in Reka and creates a complete park experience.
