Discover the World of the Neanderthals and Explore the Archaeological Park
Explore Divje Babe Archaeological Park through a guided experience that reveals the story of this exceptional site and takes visitors back to the time of the Neanderthals.
The park brings together prehistoric heritage, natural surroundings, and traces of 20th-century history.
The tour begins on the Šebrelje Plateau in front of the Church of St. John the Baptist, overlooking the peaceful landscape above the Idrijca River valley. From here, visitors are introduced to the world of the Neanderthals, life in the cave, and the significance of the discovery of the Neanderthal flute — the world’s oldest known musical instrument.
The route continues across varied terrain that requires basic physical fitness and includes several uneven stone steps.
The cave is located on the slope below the plateau, approximately 120 metres from the starting point.
Along the way, visitors can also see remains from the First World War, including caverns and trenches near the church that reflect the history of the area.
The guided tour concludes at a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the Idrijca River valley and the Idrija–Cerkno hills.
Step inside Slovenia’s first digitized cave, where prehistory literally comes to life through projections on the cave walls. A guided tour of the cave takes you through archaeological layers from various time periods and, in the upper part of the cave, vividly presents the mysterious world of Neanderthals, life in the cave, and the beginnings of musical expression.
One of the highlights of the experience is the sound of the world’s oldest known musical instrument, which you can hear via projection in the very cave where it was discovered.
The digital interpretation offers a modern, emotional, and engaging way to understand the site while preserving respect for the exceptional archaeological heritage.
Welcome to the Centre of the Experience
Visitors can also explore Divje Babe Archaeological Park through a guided virtual reality experience using VR headsets. This version of the experience is intended for visitors with limited mobility, school groups, and organised groups outside the regular tour season.
Through virtual reality, visitors can explore the digitised cave, learn about Neanderthal life, and discover the story of the world’s oldest musical instrument in an interactive and accessible way. The entire experience is accompanied by a guide who connects the virtual presentation with the story of the archaeological park.
For school groups, the guided VR experience is available by prior arrangement at the Centre for School and Extracurricular Activities (CŠOD) Cerkno. For visitors with limited mobility, the experience can also be organised at the archaeological park near the Church of St. John the Baptist, upon prior arrangement.
